About us

Comics was founded in 1995 by Roland van Breeman and his wife, Michelle. It quickly became a local favourite attracting customers from all surrounding neighbourhoods, and building a reputation for quality and affordable food. With a wide range of meal options spanning from classic burgers and ribs to pizza’s, curries and salads, demand for Comics was always at a high. In 2013, the Glenashley branch was opened and became an instant hit, with better seating and more space it allowed Comics to establish itself as not just a takeaway, but a restaurant too.

Fast forward to 2017, Matt started as a waiter in Grade 11 to try earn some extra money. He quickly fell in love with the business and loyal customers and worked his way to shop manager in 2021. For a brief period from 2023 to 2024, Comics was sold to another buyer. The opportunity then presented itself to Matt in 2024 to purchase Comics and become the new owner. He took this opportunity with both hands and aims to further establish and grow the brand into something bigger.

Comics currently has one location, employing 11 full time staff and 11 casual staff. We aim to grow our footprint in the Durban North community and hope to open further branches and try different avenues in the years to come.

“I really love what I do, apart from the food, my favourite part is interacting with my customers and developing lasting relationships with them. I love seeing the children so happy running around the garden and our regular customers always have a story to tell. I always say I’m not just a waiter but a therapist, I love listening to my customers stories, happy or sad, and getting to know them on a personal level. There’s something really special about serving food to people and seeing them happy after eating, nothing beats it” – Matt
